During World War II, the family spent several years manning an Air Warning Service (AWS) lookout on Grassy Knob, a high mountain peak about 5 miles inland from Cape Blanco. The AWS lookouts along the coast were the government’s aircraft early warning system against a surprise Japanese attack. All food and supplies were brought up to the lookout by mule train. During daylight hours, Mark and the older boys helped their parents spot, monitor, and report all aircraft flying along the coast. After the War the family moved to Paisley, Oregon, where Mark spent his early teenage years before moving on to San Diego to finish high school.
