With his construction background, Mark soon found himself in the Army’s combat engineers, operating heavy construction equipment near the 38th Parallel. He served in B Company of the 74th Engineer Combat Battalion. Mark was killed by a grenade explosion in Ghol-Gol, North Korea when he got down from his bulldozer to go to the aid of some ROK soldiers. His death enabled his mother to win a postmaster appointment in Julian. As postmaster, she was able to support the family until the brothers were grown.
